    Francis left Poultney, Vermont soon after he graduated from Troy Conference Academy. He spent several years in Hartford, Connecticut, USA learing the clothing business. From Hartford, he moved to Boston, Mass. where he worked for R.H. White Company in their clothing department.

    He returned to Poultney, Vermont in the early 1900's but when World War I broke out, he was sent to France. He spent two and a half years there, largely in the capacity of expediting the handling and distribution of supplies for army canteens, and much of his time was spent in or near Paris. Francis was a handsome man, about five feet eleven inches tall, had grey eyes, and weighed about 180 pounds. He was interested in amateur dramatics and play&d a leading part in almost two-thirds of the plays which were put on in Poultney and the surrounding towns. Being a fine horseman, he often lead the parades in the town.

    He was very dignified and always did the proper thing. He never passed a woman without tipping his hat, and in a small town that was very noticeable. His grace and good mannaers were something that everybody in the comnunity was conscious of and he was well respected. Francis stayed in the clothing business until he was in his sixties then went selling insulation. He did so well at it, that the head of the company offered him the job of sales manager. This offer came just a few days before his seventieth birthday, so he did not accept it. It is interesting to note that he did not find his real niche in business until he was past sixty.

    Physical Description:
    6' 2.5" tall, broad shouldered and narrow-hipped, over two hundred pounds. He retained excellent physical condition until he was past 80 years old, good enough condition break a colt. He had bright blue deep-set eyes, light brown hair and a fine tenor singing voice. He sat in the choir most of his life and played tuba in a band. The choirs and bands changed but he kept his firm opinions about music.

    Returned to Rutland afterwards.

    All his life he was interested in miliary matters in all countries.

    he returned after the war to his father's farm in East Poultney and bought a half interest in it from his father.

    Occupation:
    When his father died, Reuben took over the whole farm and raised registered Jersey cattle. He had the first important herd of that kind of cattle in Rutland County. He also raised Morgan horses, which were his greatest interest and nearly caused his financial downfall. He loved horses and was, throughout his later life , convinced that the automobile was a passing fancy and could never supplant horses as transportation.

    Notes:

    Nearly 6 ' 2" tall, always slender, a scholarly man and neat about his appearance. After 1817, he went by stage and oxcart from Rutland, Vermont to Circleville, Ohio and Columbus, Ohio. In 1843 he went by packet on the Eire Canal to Buffalo by Lake boat to Sandusky, and by carriage to Columbus, Ohio. Of this last trip there is a daily diary, telling of the luxury of tralling thus.

    Descendant of John chipman who married Hope Howland, the daughter of Jogn Howland, Pilgrim. Her uncle was first Attorney General of Vermont, a petitioner for Statehood. She became senile in her last few years, she was never bed-ridden, and took pride in her appearance.

    Walter G Thrall's 1862 Genealogy book says ... "He had a strong intellect, a retentive memory, and was a jovial companion; was fond of company, a farmer; he was a man of large size. This couple had eight children: Luther, Walter, Reuben R., William B., and Charlotte, and three others who died in infancy."

    Thrall History 1640 - 1965 by D Stephen Thrall says ... "All Jesse's children received a good education, for that period. Two sons were prominent lawyers, anoth son a successful publisher and printer, and one was Treasurer of Ohio and Grand Master of Ohio Masons."

    Residence:
    Moved to Ohio at the urging of his brother-in-law, Timothy Rose taking with him his sons Walter and William and his daughter Charlotte. Ohio was the prettymuch a wilderness, but he settled in Circleville where he was active in business until he died aged 78.

    Walter G Thrall's 1862 Genealogy book says ... "Mabel was the third daughter and eighth child of Justus and Deborah Rose. For about fifty years she was a consistent member of the Baptist Church, beloved by all of her acquaintances, pious and exemplary; a warm friend, and possessed a cultivated mind."

    D Stephen Thralls, Thrall genealogy 1630 -1965 says ... "mabel Rose came from true pioneer stock. Her grandfather had come from Scotland to Granville, Mass. Her father and brothers had been very active in Granville Affairs. they had been leaders in the movement West. Obviously Mabel Rose was a virile, strong and intelligent woman."
